About 'A Children's Charter for Learning'

The 'What Makes Learning Exciting Conference?', held at NCSL in Nottingham on 5 June 2008, brought together approximately 170 children from 17 primary schools, from across the country, to share examples of innovative learning in their schools.

The nine-to-eleven year old children gave presentations of exciting projects taking place in their schools. They went on to consider what had made their learning in these projects successful and, ultimately, what they would like learning in schools to look like in the future.

Common strands from these discussions were drawn together to form a Children's Charter for Learning which was presented to Mick Waters, Director of Curriculum, QCA, who praised their work and undertook to feed the children’s views into the independent review of the Primary Curriculum.

We want to encourage schools to create their own 'Children's Charter for Learning' and to share many of these on this dedicated website. We hope that developing and sharing the charters, will form part of a wider process of engaging children and developing even more powerful and innovative approaches to learning in primary schools.
