| Birchfield Community School Children’s Charter for Learning The charter was compiled by children from Year 5 and 6. Miss Fowles (Assistant Headteacher for transition faculty) went into each class (6 classes in total x 30 children in each class) and explained what the charter was about and went through the original charter and the question: If you were head teacher...
Children worked in pairs to complete mind maps and thought showers related to their learning and they were asked to group ideas and make links where they could. Once collected, a working party of about fifteen children used the ideas to present them in a creative way and they chose art and ICT. The school council were the driving force as most of the organisation was done by the chair of the council and head girl. At a later date the children adapted the charter for a presentation they gave to Government ministers from London and Holland at the Government building in Birmingham. The presentation centred around the innovative aspects of our curriculum already in place. The focus for this was more closely linked with community cohesion and preventing extremism and how the children learn about these issues on a national and global context.
